UICC World Cancer Congress 2006Bridging the Gap: Transforming Knowledge into ActionJuly 8-12, 2006, Washington, DC, USA |
Methods: Grounds for Health partners with coffee cooperatives and utilizes their network to provide community outreach, transportation and follow up as well as treatment funds when needed. We work closely with local health care providers to improve existing services and infrastructure through clinical training, technical assistance and the provision of medical equipment. GFH's funding comes almost exclusively from US-based, socially responsible coffee companies who share our interest in improving the quality of life of coffee farmers. In addition to funding, they also provide logistical support and in-country networking. Many coffee business members also serve as board members and/or volunteers in our community screening campaigns.
Results: GFH has provided screening services to over 11,000 women as well as training to more than 100 health care providers and community health educators. Our partner communities now have a greater understanding and acceptance of the importance of women's health issues, of cancer prevention in general, and the benefits of a community-wide effort to effectively address health issues. The model developed was the result of chance but it serves as an ideal model of community involvement and community based solutions to existing barriers to access for poor women. In addition, it is an excellent example of the support available to non-profits through partnering with the business community.
