Interdisciplinary care in the cancer setting:rhetoric or reality? Perspectives from Europe

Yvonne Wengström, OCN, PhD, Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, 171 76 Stockholm, Eugeniahemmet, Sweden

The last decade has been characterized by substantial financial cuts, related staff redundancies and reorganization of health care in many countries in Europe. This creates challenges to define what is needed to further care for patients with cancer. This also involves building the interdisciplinary structures needed and moving beyond the traditional framework for treatment and care to embrace a more integrative approach. We need to grasp opportunities, confident that together we will have the skills and knowledge to move forward. Today is yesterdays tomorrow and we can do something about today to ensure tomorrow is how we want it to be.
