Objective: To examine the roles that cancer organisations can play in tobacco control, and to present an overview of current practice among selected UICC member organisations. Methods: A case-study-based overview of tobacco control practices and activities in tobacco control, and a survey of tobacco policies, among current UICC member organisations. Results: Engagement by cancer organisations in cancer control offers opportunities to reduce cancer and can help fulfill their mission. Cancer organisations can act directly with patients, to raise awareness among cancer professionals, and to inform public policy on tobacco, as well working in partnership with other organisations, both national and international. Case studies of successful actions will be presented. A code of practice on tobacco for health professional organisations has been developed by the World Health Organisation. In partnership with selected member organisations, UICC has developed a self-assessment tool to enable cancer organisations to measure their compliance with the code of practice (www.uicc.org). In addition, UICC member organisations have been invited to participate in a survey of their current practices, activities and resources with regard to tobacco control. Results of the survey will be presented, and opportunities and tools for improvement presented.
