Objective: To describe how to implement cancer prevention and control activities in communities in Songjiang District in Shanghai. Methods: Using information provided by Shanghai Cancer Registry and Patient Database, and Shanghai Community Residents Health Records to know the need of the community on cancer prevention and control. Our strategy is to classify the population in the community into 3 groups: general population, people with high risk factors and cancer patient. To general population, we focus on health education to improve their awareness and knowledge. We select people with high risk factors using information from Health Archives, design specific health education and intervention program toward breast cancer, colorectal cancer and liver cancer, encourage them to participant in the early detection program, and follow them to collect the data for program evaluation. We establish a cancer patient care program for all the cancer patients living in the community, provide them basic services on common symptoms control, pain relief, depression detection and intervention. Results: The communities based cancer prevention and control network involved 14 community health service centers, 5 general hospitals and 800 health professionals in Songjiang, covers 520,000 residents. The Health Records collected information from 80.42% people over 15 years old. We hold “Cancer prevention week” every year for general population education. We provide community based patient care for about 3600 cancer survivors per year, including routine home visiting, family bed, and basic clinic and nursing care in Community Health Service Center. We are implementing a BSE program coving 37,000 women, a liver cancer early detection program coving 5000 people with high risk factors, among them about 1700 people are followed up regularly, and a colorectal early detection program in outpatients in Community Health Service Centers, 258 patients with relative symptoms were followed. 4 cases on early stage were detected last year.
