Using the Media for Effective Breast Cancer Awareness

Objective: To increase breast cancer awareness campaign that will change the beahiour of the patients towards opening up for a safe life.

Methods: A selected number of journalists were invited to a three day National workshop strictly for media practitioners in Nigeria. The workshop focused issues on Breast cancer early detection, Self and clinical examination. Current Information materials were distributed for public understanding of Breast cancer through media report. The journalists were followed up after the workshop with a customised listserve that provide information on latest development in among cancer organisations locally and internationally.

Results:The media in Nigeria has taken up the campaign to enlighten the public through different stories from survivors and cancer organisations. The cancer patients in Nigeria who have hitherto hid the disease to themeselves to avoid stigmatization are now coming out for treatment. Journalists can thus be a great vechicle of successfull campaign if effectively used.
