Bridging the Gap of Cancer Management between the Developed & Developing World

Theresa Nkeoma NWOSU, B.Ed, NCE, Counselling, Princess Nikky Breast Cancer Foundation, PLOT 284, AKINTOLA BOULEVARD,, GARKI II, ABUJA, FCT, Nigeria

Objective:The problems facing Cancer Management in developing countries are poverty, hunger, and primary diseases of Malaria, Polio and HIV/AIDS with limited resources left for Cancer. There are few hospitals with equipments and trained personnel. Most drugs used are imported which makes cost of treatment expensive for Cancer victims.

Methods:Since the world is a global village, close linkages between countries is encouraged which if not checked might explode on the world. The manufacturing companies should establish offices in these countries to make the drugs cheaper/accessible. Sponsorships, trainings, exchange programmes should be encouraged with Grants given to organizations that are involved in cancer awareness/ management programmes. Also drugs and equipments for screening/treatment should be donated to developing countries for cancer management.

Results: IAEA is sponsoring a staff of the foundation for two weeks scientific training in a cancer centre abroad, to learn the advantages/disadvantages of radiation therapy for cancer victims. IAEA is working with Nigeria to implement Program of Action on Cancer Therapy. Austria and Nigeria is presently collaborating to upgrade/rehabilitate Eight teaching hospitals into full Cancer Management Centres. We hope to set up the Africa against Cancer like what obtains in other continents: Europe against Cancer, Asia against Cancer.
