The poster describes the role and the results of work of cancer information service in Tatarstan Republic (Russia) in the area of breast cancer detection. Cancer information center was established by Cancer Foundation of Tatarstan Republic in assosiation with Kazan cancer center in 2000.
The goal of informational intervention was to increase the rates of early diagnosed cases of breast cancer in Tatarstan Republic. It is important, that the financial recourses were limited.
Methods: • Educating public using TV, radio, newspapers. The news programs and interesting events were used to place free of charge information about benefits of early detection of breast cancer. • Educating the workers of primary medical network in rural areas. In Tatarstan Republic there are about 1 600 medical ambulances in rural areas. Each medical ambulance service about 500 families. So, during the year each woman can be educated and examined by physician or nurse of rural medical ambulance. • We have created the questionnaire to assess the barriers encounted by women in the area of early detection of breast cancer. About 5 000 guestionnairies were spread among our population. • We used the financial recourses of election companies to examine and educate women about possibilities of breast cancer detection.
Results: The increased rates of annual clinical breast examination, increased mammogram rates and increased rates of monthly breast self-examination.
