Crossing the Border: Innovative Strategies in School Cancer Education Preventive Programme in Thar Desert of India

SURESH CHAND SANCHEETEE, M.D., ONCOLOGY, RAJASTHAN CANCER CURE HOSPITAL LIMITED UNIT SANCHETEE HOSPITAL AND CANCER INSTITUTE, 429 PAL LINK ROAD, JODHPUR, 342 008, India

Objective:In general, the majority is advocating a strategy of prevention and basic cure instead of a fierce curative treatment process in developing countries. In a long-term programme of collaboration with other countries we have accumulative evidence that the transfer of school cancer education programme to other developing countries is not only feasible but also often useful

Methods:The cancer education preventive programme for school children and teachers has a three years plan. Thar Desert of India initiates designs to increase awareness and access of these children to guidelines for cancer education in school as per U.I.C.C. norms. In the first year, an assessment was conducted with school children & teachers using in depth teachings as per U.I.C.C. guidelines with local modification. The second year the project focused on the development of audience specific information .The third year of the project focused on dissemination. A sample of 30 schools and about 4000 children & 150 teachers were selected. Focus group identified about 950 children.

Results:The need of assessment identified a wide range of information gaps across the separation of prevention and screening.. The dissemination materials about preventive cancer education programme are a process that requires ingenuity, collaboration and persistent effort. The presentation will highlight the result of preventive Cancer education programme, need of assessment and the finding from focus groups across the country.
