Temporal Trends in Breast Cancer Presentation in the Third World

Objective:To study whether the presentation of breast cancer has changed significantly over the years in line with global trends. To study if any social habits like alcohol or tobacco is linked with breast cancer in the third world.

Methods:A prospective study initiated in 1985 for all breast cancer patients attending 4 hospitals located in the Eastern Nigeria heartland where the author practiced. On attendance to hospital detailed epidemiological data including social habits are collected from patients.

Results:Reports of the initial ten years [1985-95] indicate an improvement on presentation from a historical control of earlier reports from the sub-region. Reports from the second ten year period ending 2005 are being compiled for analysis.
