AAPI Community Voices to Make a Change

Nicole Kang, BA, Roxanna Bautista, and Amy Wong. Chronic Diseases, Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, 450 Sutter Street, Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94108

Objective: This abstract assesses challenges faced by AAPI communities in accessing quality, culturally and linguistically appropriate cancer treatment and support services, and patient advocacy.

Methods: APIAHF implemented focus groups nationally to assess AAPI cancer and survivorship needs. Participants exchanged information about existing support services, barriers in access to services, and methods to address patient concerns. The feedback has been instrumental in deepening APIAHF's perspective on appropriate care for AAPI cancer survivors.

Flyers with focus group information were distributed at conferences to encourage participation of survivors, health care providers, and community members. Focus group sessions were facilitated by APIAHF with questions around cancer treatment and support services, challenges and barriers in accessing cancer care, and recommendations for future action. Responses were compiled into summary briefs.

Results:

The following themes emerged:

-Lack of healthcare facilities and providers that provide culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare, advocates who lobby for and develop relevant and culturally appropriate programs, and accessible NGOs and comprehensive cancer centers with primary and cancer treatment. -Fatalistic view of cancer that discourages individuals from discussing their prognosis and seeking timely and appropriate care. -Low usage of mainstream healthcare services due to uninsurance in AAPI communities.

Participants recommended: Increased access to low-cost services and resources, programs addressing financial barriers for care, and provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate cancer related resources and services through AAPI specific cancer support groups in the US; and better coordination of cancer resources, such as advocacy for other services related to cancer support.
