N.R Tulasi, MD, M. Nagarajan, MD, and V. Nagarajan. V.N.Cancer centre, GKNM Hospital, P.N.Palayam, Coimbatore, 641037, India

Objective:To determine the symptom pattern and consequent needs in patients with advanced carcinoma cervix

Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients who completed treatment for carcinoma cervix between January 1994 to January 1996 was conducted.A total of 345 patients in various stages had undergone radical treatment. They were followed up to see occurence and pattern of metastases

Results:58 patients developed metastasis. The time interval between completion of treatment and appearance of metastasis varied from less than 6 months in 23 to greater than 3 years in 9 patients. The follow up duration following development of the metastases was less than 12 months in 23patients. The predominant site of metastases was in the paraaortic nodes followed by bones, lungs and other sites such as brain. Of the 58 patients ,20 patients had symptomatic treatment only. This ranged from 24 months in 17,24 to 36 months in 9 and more than 3 years in 9 patients. Conclusion:Knowing patterns of advanced disease of the common malignancies in any community helps in utilising the resources to deal with them effectively and also assuring a good quality of life for these individuals. This is more so in a developing countries like India
