Prevalence of Cancer Cervix and Problems Faced during a Screening Program in a Localized Area in Bangladesh

Objective:Carcinoma of the cervix is more prevalent in countries like Bangladesh but unfortunately the cases are being detected at a very late stage. Reasons are mainly social and or economical. Screening of the disease provides an opportunity to detect cases at an early stage. Lots of various social problems had to face to get the fruit of screening process. This study was aimed to detect number of cases of cancer cervix by screening and the problems faced during the whole procedure.

Methods:Twenty eight women field level workers were trained and equipped with teaching materials about prevention and importance of early detection of cancer cervix. These field workers tried to create awareness and motivate 3500 women above the age of 20yrs. in the rural district of Narsingdi within Bangladesh. Only 1146 women could be brought under screening program. All these women were examined by experienced Gynaecologists and Pap's Test were performed.

Results:

Among 1146 women examined 23.56% were found to have normal cervix and 70.15% had inflammatory lesions. Among the rest malignancy was found in 1.8% of cases, candidiasis in1.83%, Papillomatosis in1.57% and dysplastic lesions in 1.05% of cases. Problems faced during the screening process were i) fear of instrumentation, ii) Ligation of the fallopian tube , iii) shyness etc. Women also expected some kind of monetary benefit from these procedures .
