Objective: TO screen heavy smokers for pre cancerous lesions.
Methods:From 2001 - 2003 , 500 persons who were heavy smokers for more than 20 years were screened and bronchial washins were vtaken for cytoloy. Informed consent was taken before undergoing procedure.
Results:Out of 500 at least 259 were having metaplasia, 108 had dysplasia and 35 were having cancer cells in cytology.They were educated and convinced to quit smoking. Those detected to have malignant cells were referred to oncologist for further mabagement.
