UICC World Cancer Congress 2006Bridging the Gap: Transforming Knowledge into ActionJuly 8-12, 2006, Washington, DC, USA |
Methods: In 2004, the Utah Cancer Action Network and the Utah Department of Health developed and administered a Men's Health Survey to determine the best way to educate men about prostate cancer screening and prevention. The Men's Health Survey was composed of selected questions from the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey and NCI's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). The survey was administered to 430 men, aged 40 to 65, and who participated in the 2004 BRFSS
Results: The majority (58%) stated they would go to the Internet first to get information about cancer and only 31% would go to their health care provider. 95% would trust information from their health care provider a lot or some; only 75% would trust the Internet a lot or some. A prostate cancer awareness campaign, including print and television, was developed that drives the consumer to the UCAN website to learn more information about the disease and screening. The prostate page has had on average more than 100 unique visitors a month since the campaign started May 2005.
