Surveillance Briefs: a New Publication from Wisconsin's Comprehensive Cancer Control Program

Stephanie K. Kaufman, MS, University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center, 610 Walnut Street, room 370 WARF, Madison, WI 53726

As part of a new cancer surveillance brief series, the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center in partnership with the Wisconsin Division of Public Health publishes Surveillance Briefs with the goal of addressing important and timely issues in the on-going effort to control cancer in Wisconsin. Below is the absract for issue number 1.

Objective: Part of the 2000 State Health Plan defined target percent change in cancer mortality rates to be met by the year 2000. The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate Wisconsin's progress in reducing cancer mortality and success in meeting the year 2000 objectives.

Methods: Wisconsin mortality data for 1984-1986 and 1999-2001 were obtained from CDC Wonder. Percent change was calculated between the two time periods.

Results: Progress was made in reducing the all-site cancer mortality but the objective was not met. The year 2000 objectives were met for breast and colorectal cancer and malignant melanoma.
