Arresting Tobacco in the Wild, Wild West

Sylvia A. Bagdonas and Jacob E. Sones, MBA. Substance Abuse Division, Wyoming Department of Health, 6101 Yellowstone Rd, Suite 220, Cheyenne, WY 82002

Objective: 1. The Tobacco Free Wyoming Communities (TFWC) and Through with Chew Campaign (TWC) grants are awarded to establish local programs to promote social and policy change through education and advocacy throughout rural Wyoming. 2. Because Wyoming is a predominately rural state, the needs for local TFWC program operations and State Department of Health (DOH) supervision, collaboration, and coordination are very specific. To satisfy these needs, The DOH is constantly evolving the management tools and methodology employed in oversight of the TFWC programs.

Methods: In 2005, the DOH initiated a program to update TFWC supervision, technical support, communications, training, reporting methodology and invoicing. In developing updates in operational management of TFWC, the DOH conducted an in-house needs analysis from the standpoint of the DOH and all local communities. Among the updates implemented were a new monthly reporting system, regular teleconference system, training and meeting methodology, and Wyoming Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (WyTTAC).

Results: The updated program had its share of successes and lessons learned, among them Wyoming hosted the 2nd Annual Spit Tobacco Summit (a national event). This 90 minute interactive presentation is designed to review the accomplishments and opportunities presented by the 2005 updates. The presentation will also detail actions taken for 2006 based on lessons learned, further needs analysis, and a revised Strategic Plan.
