McDonald, Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7, Canada.

Objective: This 90 minute workshop will present a model used by a national cancer organization and its provincial Divisions to build capacity for understanding, undertaking and utilizing evaluation and research knowledge in program planning and delivery.

Methods: The Canadian Cancer Society and the Centre for Behavioural Research and Program Evaluation (CBRPE) have worked together over the last five years to develop a model for bringing researchers, evaluators, program managers and staff and volunteers together to develop continuous quality improvement surveys, outcome evaluations, literature synthesis, and needs assessments.

Results: As a result of the capacity development model used, four major CCS programs undertake continuous quality improvement surveys using common performance indicators, providing a comparative basis for organizational planning and decision-making. Techniques for identifying research / evaluation needs, developing protocols and conducting studies within the practice setting have been developed, tested and institutionalized. Report presentations are tailored to audience needs to ensure knowledge transfer and utilization. This presentation will share the lessons learned in building two way evaluation and knowledge transfer capacity – from practice settings to the research / evaluation field, and from the research / evaluation field to practice. The Canadian Cancer Society will review how the knowledge gained from evaluations has been used within the organization and CBRPE will review how the knowledge it has gained about the practice setting has been used to enhance evaluation skills.
