Bridging the Gap: Transforming Knowledge into Action

July 8-12, 2006, Washington, DC, USA

Saturday, 8 July 2006: 6:00 PM-7:30 PM
Ballroom A-C (Convention Center)
Bridging the Gap: The Global Cancer Challenge
Our knowledge about cancer prevention and control is increasing, yet the number of cancer cases grows every year. Should the trend continue, 16.5 million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2020, two-thirds of them in developing nations. The opening session of the 19th UICC World Cancer Congress will take a close look at the worldwide cancer burden, including the massive direct and indirect financial costs of the disease and will document the global impact of the looming cancer epidemic. The international community will be challenged to ensure that the knowledge and resources required to greatly reduce the cancer threat receives priority status in the health, political, economic, and development agendas at global and national levels. This would enhance the building of health systems infrastructures, and ensure that financial mechanisms and required resources are in place to implement priority interventions. Engaging major donor agencies and attracting private international and national financial investments in cancer control is also of strategic importance in countering the global cancer threat. Former President George H.W. Bush a leader of “C-Change” will describe how this prototype organization is leveraging the united voice of the public, private and non-governmental sectors in tackling barriers which restrain cancer control in the USA. Congress participants will receive an updated version of The Cancer Atlas which charts the state of cancer throughout the world. The World Cancer Congress Declaration will also be introduced.
