| It is estimated that in 20 years, the number of worldwide cancer deaths will increase from 7 million to 10 million yearly. Since at least one-third of the annual 10 million new cancers are preventable, this session will re-emphasize the need for cancer practitioners, at all levels, to give the prevention of cancer a higher priority on their personal and agency agendas. The creation of comprehensive local/regional/national cancer control plans and the opportunities to build and strengthen intersector alliances and partnerships will be discussed. Speakers will highlight designs of the resulting systems and structures required to carry out cancer control plans appropriate to resources available. Examples of national and state planning efforts will be highlighted. These efforts will be complemented by work underway at the UICC and the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is developing practical tools to help Member States build and improve their National Cancer Control Programs. The UICC is preparing similar guidelines on the planning role of NGOs and it will be spearheading implementation of Declarations from the Congress and Leadership Summit. These Declarations have the potential to be the launching point for a bold, revitalized and coordinated effort to reduce the cancer threat worldwide. | |||
