Models for Tobacco Treatment from around the World

Jonathan Foulds, PhD, Tobacco Dependence Program, University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, School of Public Health, 317 George Street, Suite 210, New Brunswick, NJ 08901

There is now solid evidence supporting a number of treatment interventions that have been shown to increase quit rates among smokers. A major challenge is how to translate the existing evidence into systems that are capable of providing effective interventions on an appropriately wide scale. Different countries have addressed this challenge in different ways.

This symposium has been organized by the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD). It aims to present the experiences of practitioners from different parts of the world in providing tobacco treatment. Practitioners from the Western and Eastern Europe, South America, Asia and New Zealand will briefly describe models of treatment delivery that are being used in their respective countries. Each one will present a success story and a challenge to be overcome. The presentations will be followed by an interactive discussion with the audience. Issues to be discussed will include (a) training of treatment providers (b) development of country-specific treatment and training guidelines (c) providing interventions that have adequate reach at a population level (d) linking treatment to other tobacco control initiatives and (e) the appropriate mix of mass media, internet, telephonic, one-to-one and group treatment interventions.
