Tobacco Control Using Youth Leaders

Flora Duarte, MD, Genaro Aguilar, and Carlos Ayala. Asociacion Hondureņa de Lucha Contra el Cancer, Residencial Las Lomas II Etapa, calle Atenas, Tegucigalpa, Honduras

The tobacco consumption in teenagers has been increasing worldwide during last decades. Because of this the AHCEC has proposed long time ago the education of teenagers and school students about the potential tobacco damage. This activity is not easy because young people do not listen older people. In order to change the situation the AHCEC has been training teenagers that have leadership in their school about the tobacco hazards and how to prevent smoking among their population. We aloud them to use teen language and this let them to communicate with other students effectively. We have developed at this time to youth groups: CASTA (Teenagers Against Tobacco Club since 1994) and LPC (Leaders in Cancer Prevention since 1987). Both groups have been working during 12 years with continuous renew of the participants. They cover different schools and high schools as well as church non for profit organizations and other private and public institutions.

We also work in cartoon, drawings, parades and martial bands contest to commemorate the International Day Against Tobacco. This contest started since 1987 and we culminate with a big parade in the Tegucigalpa city streets.
