Overcoming Tobacco Disparities in Native American Communities

This specific presentation will be focus on tobacco's impact on Native Americans in rural reservations and urban settings including the history of traditional tobacco use among Native Americans and how the tobacco industry markets to the Native American population.

Then the presentation will highlight the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRP-MIC), a federally recognized American Indian Tribe located in metropolitan Phoenix, and how it has developed an effect prevention model for traditional and modern Native Americans alike. This prevention model includes best practices approaches to creating effective prevention messages through media. This will also discuss SRP-MIC tobacco policy building efforts with local tribal leaders and collaborative efforts with Arizona Indian Tribes.

The learning objectives will include 1) increasing awareness about Native American trends in tobacco use and targeting by the tobacco industry 2) increasing awareness of best practices for developing prevention campaigns and policy in Native American communities, and 3) motivating Native American tribal leaders, tobacco control and public health advocates to further discuss the importance of building capacity and leadership for all diverse communities and incorporating this priority in national tobacco control programs.
