Sacrificing their Future: First Hand Accounts of Child Laborers in Global Tobacco Production and Strategies for Holding Multinationals Accountable

Derek J. Baxter, International Labor Rights Fund, 2001, Washington, DC 20009

The presentation will complement the topics already set out in Mr. Collingsworth's abstract. In particular, however, I will focus on the factual background behind abusive labor practices in the tobacco industry abroad, among other areas, including how farmers are unable to extricate themselves from indebtedness and the widespread use of child labor in the sector. I will touch on the legal responsibility of multinational tobacco companies for human rights violations suffered by their employees and others in their supply chain.
