Going Tobacco Free on a Shoestring Budget: the Peers against Tobacco Model

Barbara J. Barras, Ritney Castine, Deforrest Ford, and Drew Hebert. Peers Against Tobacco, Inc., Louisiana Tobacco Control Program, 4826 Hwy 308, Napoleonville, LA 70390

Objective: To define advocacy for non-profit agencies that mobilize youth and encourage them to participate in activities that promote the non-smoking policy of peers against tobacco.

Audience: Non-profit and Governmental Agencies.

Methods: Participants will plan activities such as circulating petitions, implementing rallies, and developing other public forums for the purpose of educating the public about the health risks of smoking and advocating the need for policy change in tobacco control.

Results: This workshop will give participants hands-on instruction by providing action plans for youth advocacy programs that can be implemented to promote tobacco control policy and that will have a positive impact on the health of communities within the state and will impact on the National level with minimal funding.

To give proven examples of advocacy that have worked in the past. Many youth advocacy groups are sponsored by non-profit and/or governmental agencies working with State Governments, City Councils, School Boards, and the United States Congress to support tobacco control programs.

To clearly present the differences between advocacy and lobbying. To provide information on protecting 501 © (3)'s and other non-profit entities through policy changes through local, state, and national legislatures regarding education on health issues as they pertain to tobacco control.

This workshop will clearly define the roles of each agency and will address programs that do not overstep the boundaries of advocacy to become lobbying. It will identify actions that can undermine an agency's goals by promoting activities that are defined as illegal under our IRS codes.
