The 13th World Conference on Tobacco OR HealthBuilding capacity for a tobacco-free worldJuly 12-15, 2006, Washington, DC, USA |
Objective:
Armenia has a “leading” position in tobacco smoking among adult population. Despite of the recently adopted Law on Limitations of Tobacco Sales, Consumption and Usage, 68% of men and 6% of women are smokers. However, there is no data on smoking among children, teenagers and younger population. Therefore, our organization is developing a Public Survey for youth and students “On spread of tobacco smoking among young people and their view on active and second hand smoking” for the purpose of creating a data base.
Methods:
It is expected to conduct Public Survey for youth and students “On spread of tobacco smoking among young people and their view on active and second hand smoking” in Yerevan and other cities of Armenia. More than 1500 students of colleges and universities in ages 17-22 will participate in the survey. It is expected that at all educational institutions, where Public Survey will be conducted, active anti-smoking events will be organized, such as lectures, discussions, distribution of T-shirts with "No Smoking” slogan, posters, etc.
Results:
Based on the results of the Public Survey to be conducted, as well as the 2004 Public Survey, we are planning to publish a brochure of our studies. Results of the Public Survey will be presented for consideration to the “Armenia Free of Tobacco” NGO Coalition and National Institute of Health, Department of Epidemiology. It is also expected to organize round table with participation of various interested NGOs, health professionals, schoolteachers, college and university faculty members, community representatives and other interested parties.
