International Experience of Tobacco Advertising Legislation and Its Practical Importance for Armenia

Objective: To formulate recommendations to decision-makers on viable ways of achieving a comprehensive ban of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, in compliance with the provisions of the FCTC. Specific objectives:  identify existing obstacles for a comprehensive ban of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship in Armenia;  identify the methods used by the tobacco industry to counter the introduction of a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising  study international experiences in introducing a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising  conduct a comparative analysis of the appropriate data from selected countries  examine national and international legislation to identify the most optimal approaches for Armenia.

Methods: o Survey Armenian policymakers to ascertain their readiness and willingness to introduce appropriate legislation for a complete ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, and their willingness to implement the legislation. o Analyze international experience in introducing a total ban on tobacco advertising in selected countries. o A review of existing Armenian legislation will be conducted by accessing the Parliament's library and its official site, the national official legislation database (IRTECH).

Results:

The research results will be used in support to all decision and policy makers. They will have in the following formats: a multi- page brochure with the analytical materials on the international experience in the implementation of the FCTC provisions on the total ban of the advertising of the tobacco products, research of the current legislation of Armenia with comparison of that legislation with the international legislation.
