Tobacco User Pregnent Women Attending Antenatal Care :Successful Quiters after Counseling by Care Provider Team at Teaching Hospital Eastern Nepal

Objective: To demonstrate the Specialty Clinic has more impact on behavioral modification to reduce the tobacco addiction for special group of people, in this case pregnant women tend to quit if Antenatal Care Provider counsel, making them to understand about the harm effect causing to fetus.

Methods: Study Design: Prospective follow up for last five years

Setting: ANC Clinic Teaching Hospital, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal.

Participants: Randomly selected pregnant women willing to be part of study are taken as subjects, after informed consent.4500 (50%) tobacco user women accepted to take part in last five years among 9100 smokers (15%)out of 136563 pregnant women, who stylized the specialty services of institute. These are women for ANC Clinic during this five years period to avail the services from Specialty Clinic of Teaching Hospital

Results:

Among the counseled mothers during the Antenatal visit, gradually numbers of quitters are seen increasing in each year starting from 2000.2001.2002, 2003, and 2004, (25%, 30%, 32 %, 33%, and 35%).The education and age is highly correlated in quitting success. Follow up after birth is still going on so absolute quitters or only during pregnancy they cease, needs to be followed and analyzed further.Creating fear is not advised by many behavioral scientists, to modify the behavior, but seeing the ethical ,moral and social responsibility of pregnant mother ,doctor occasionally used methods which would have been scary like showing the photography and other research results, influencing to take decision to stop smoking during pregnancy.
