Building capacity for a tobacco-free world

Objective: In Indonesia, more than half of male adult is smoker, whereas among physician the prevalence of smoking is 8%. It is known that health officers, included physicians, are the role model of healthy behavior for the community. Community may misinterpret that smoking is healthy behavior because most people are smoker and especially some physicians are also smokers. Consequently, medical education institution responsible to provide supporting environment which is disagree with smoking behavior, thus medical students are motivated to be a non smoker. There should be a strong tobacco control policy in medical education institution.
Methods: Assessment of the student's opinion regarding tobacco control policy was done on a survey. A qualitative data collection tried to explore the needed tobacco control policy in their faculty. Those data displayed and tobacco control regulation proposed to policy maker together with students. Poster and warning sign of no smoking area were distributed.
Results: Survey among medical student showed that 88% of them agree that students are the role model for not smoking behavior, 90% agree that their faculty of medicine should be a non smoking area. There are existing and effective communication network among students and among supporting staff. Displaying the survey result to policy makers in the Faculty is important to create tobacco control regulation. Clear no smoking warning sign and interesting non smoking poster is important to make smoker realize the non smoking area. Continuous advocacy is needed to keep the tobacco control policy application works.
