Masha Valkova Gavrailova, Dr., Protection of Public Health, Ministry of Health, 5, Sveta Nedelja Sq, Sofia, 1632, Bulgaria

Objective: On October 18, 2005 the Bulgarian Parliament ratified the FCTC. The more difficult part of the process – to implement the FCTC - is before standing. The paper discusses the measures, which are to be undertaken next.

Methods: : The measures introduced already are presented. The labeling of the tobacco products according to the FCTC requirements and to the EU Directives has been introduced. The prohibition of cigarette sales to young people aged less than 18 years has been regulated. The newly adapted Health Low prohibits smoking on public and working places, including in the public transport. The Low on Radio and Television prohibits the advertisements of tobacco products through the electronic media. A mechanism for stepwise rising of the excise of the tobacco products and hence their prizes has been created. Since 2002 Bulgaria has a National Program for Tobacco Control that foresees measures for reduction of tobacco products demand and consumption. So, what next? The paper highlights the measures that are to be undertaken. The regulation of the advertisements in printing issues is before standing. Another part of the activities is to be directed to the expanding health education predominantly among the young people. Sanctions against the illegal trade with tobacco products are foreseen.
