Objective: To shine a light on the lengths to which the tobacco industry has gone to discredit whistleblowers in order to keep smokers, litigators and regulators from finding out the truth about cigarettes and about what the tobacco industry knows about the health effects of smoking. The tobacco industry has employed methods such as threats and intimidation to keep whistleblowers from going public, and smear campaigns to discredit those who do.
Methods: Using internal industry documents and press reports, I will show how the tobacco industry deals with the problem of whistleblowers.
Results: Attendees will gain knowledge about how the tobacco industry improperly uses its attorneys to threaten those who seek to speak the truth about the industry's activities.
