Tobacco Cigarette Retailers in Ibadan: Knowledge of Health Consequences and Reasons for Engaging in Tobacco Trade

Objective: 1. To find out knowledge of health consequences of tobacco smoking among cigarette retailers in Ibadan 2. Identify reasons why tobacco cigarette retailers in Ibadan engage in tobacco trade.

Methods: The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and 30 tobacco cigarette retailers within and around University of Ibadan were purposively sampled. Indepth interview guide served as research instrument.

Results: majority of the study participants were not aware that cigarette smoking can lead to serious diseases. Majority however identified bad body odur as major potential health problem of a tobacco smokers. Also majority were not aware of the health implications of ETS. There is therefore an urgent need for workshops/seminars for this group on health consequences of tobacco smoking. This will enable them to identify those involved in tobacco trade as agents of diseases and deaths.
