Objective: To evaluate demographics, prevalence of cigarette smoking and other tobacco use, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, desire smoking cessation, and training received regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation techniques among third year medical students in Lithuania.
Methods: During the survey all third year medical students were invited to fill the questionnaire. Data were collected using a consistent survey methodology which was developed by World Health Organization, CDC, and the Canadian Public Health Association. The Global Health Professionals Survey (GHPS) was developed to collect data on tobacco use and cessation counseling among health-profession students in all WHO member states. GHPS is a school-based survey of third – year students pursuing advanced degrees in dentistry, medicine, nursing, or pharmacy. GHPS uses a core questionnaire on demographics, prevalence of cigarette smoking and other tobacco use, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, desire smoking cessation, and training received regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation techniques.
Results: The results will let to compare smoking prevalence among medical students and general population. It will help to determine a future health professional believes about smoking cessation. It will show what level of training about smoking and cessation of addiction students gets in the first three study years.
