Objective: The international antismoking campaign Quit and Win (Q & W) has been conducted biennially in many countries since 1994. Iran had joined this international antismoking strategy since 1998. The one month and one year quit rates of four campaigns are presented here.
Methods: Eligible subjects for this contest are smokers whose age ≥ 18 years and reported their willing to quit by filling the standard registration. They were asked to stop smoking for one month. After one month of quitting, in order to participate in the final draw, all self-reported quitters were verified by witnesses and for some of them biochemical urine test. A year later 1000 participants were randomly selected and followed for the one-year quit rate by completing questionnaires which include questions on the determinants for quitting or relapses. Urine continine tests were done for some of those who claimed to be quitters after one year.
Results: The number (percent) of smokers who participated in the campaign were 7065 (93%), 8024 (94%), 14650 (97%) and 4429 (88%) participants in the years 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 respectively. The one month and one year abstaining rates are presented in the following figure. .
