The 13th World Conference on Tobacco OR HealthBuilding capacity for a tobacco-free worldJuly 12-15, 2006, Washington, DC, USA |
Objective: The study was directed to the CO concentration measurement in order to establish and to visualize the impact of smoking among the staff of the Sofia Hygiene and Epidemiological Inspectorate.
Methods: The efforts were focused on collecting information on the problem and to compare the findings among smokers and no-smokers. The second group being exposed on passive smoking. The efforts were designed to alter the attitude of the smokers to the problem and to encourage them change their smoking behavior. A Smoke Check Monitor – a screening test instrument designed to assess and to visualize unbiased impact of smoking, accomplished the examination.
Results: The examination's results identified 12,7% of the smokers as no-smokers. The probable explanation could be that they were either current smokers or they smoke only from time to time. The opposite situation was found among the no-smokers: 2,0% was identified as light smokers and another 2,0% - as heavy smokers. This is to be interpreted as a demonstration of the adverse effect of passive smoking. The results from the Smoke Check Monitor screening survey demonstrate undoubtedly the adverse health effect of smoking and of passive smoking on the staff of the Sofia Hygiene and Epidemiological Inspectorate.
