Objective: to know the 13-15 years old student smoking status in 4 citied of China.
Methods: Subject were middle school students age 13-15 Study design: The Chinese GYTS was a school based cross-sectional survey. A two-stage cluster sample design was employed to produce a representative sample of student aged 13-15. the study was conducted in Tianjin, Shanghai, Zhuhai and Pu Yang according to their location. The questionnaire was based on the core questionnaire. Some new questions were added according to Chinese situation. Study was conducted in 2005.
Results: in Puyang, 24.4%student answered yes to have ever smoked cigarette. The male student are five folds of female student. (41.2% vs. 8.4%, respectively).In Shanghai, ever smoking rate for student is 19.9%, boy's is double of girl's (27.1%, 13.1%)In Tianjin, 17.1% ever try to smoking, the boy' s rate is three fold of girl's.(27.0% vs. 8.0% respectively).In Zhuahi, 1 in 4 students (24.4%) ever try to smoking, almost same with Tianjin, the boy's rate is three fold of girl's. (35.4% vs. 12.5% respectively). More than 6 in 10 students said that they had bee taught dangers of smoking in class (62.8% in Shanghai to 76% in Zhuhai).Approximately more than half of current smokers want to quit smoking Exposure to secondhand smoke was very high for all students in 4 selected cities, both in their homes and in public places.Over six in ten student (for Puyang is 60.45, Shanghai is 68.6%, Tianjin is 63.5%, Zhuhai is 73.9%) saw anti-smoking media message in the past 30 days
