Objective:

Russian Anti-Tobacco Internet Project “NOSMOKING.RU” was started in year 2000 in order to create the centralized source of materials, which helps people to quit smoking. Later the political and economical aspects of Tobacco were covered. Russia is a country, where population lacks true information about smoking: the magazines and newspapers are printing the articles in favor of smoking and movie stars defend smoking habits in prime time on TV.

Methods: The forces are focused on: enabling the first-aid for those who decided to quit smoking; educating the public about health hazards, relating to smoking; monitoring the mass media in order to check and prevent illegal advertising; collecting information through whole Russia about public actions against tobacco; creating the community of people (volunteers) which are ready to participate in anti-tobacco struggle.

Results: Russian Anti-Tobacco Internet Project “NOSMOKING.RU” has become the most popular resource in Russian-speaking internet, devoted to the problems of tobacco. We established cooperation and held the joint actions with traditional institution (Russian Anti-Tobacco Initiative, Russian Oncological Center, Coorination Center of Ministry of Health, etc). The popularity of the site and the growing audience (visitors doubled in last year) shows the importance of this source of information. 91% of the audience considers the material of the site useful and helpful. The actions held by the site activists helped to stop the illegal advertising campaigns of snus and cigarettes promotion in the internet. Further efforts are required to spread the information and create anti-tobacco oriented community.
