Law Enforcement and Endorsement for Clean Air in Public Transportation and Places in Jordan

Muna Hamzeh, Jordan Anti-Smoking Society, Abdul Hameed Sharaf St., Amman, 1492, Jordan

Objective: Enforcing the law that ban smoking in public places and public transportation; this was a major problem in Jordan, the law was never activated, and people had no idea of. We had many complains from citizens that whom suffered a lot of health hazards due to smoking in public places.

Methods: We added a rule to the traffic laws that penalties the driver if he or any of his passengers smoked in the vehicle. An employee was employed to penalty any one (administrative for employees, and money for customers) who smokes in public places. A specific room was nominated as a smoking room in every public place. We placed signs that say (smoking is banned by law), we also used mass media to inform people of the in active law and encourage them to have an active role to help enforce this law. We did a lot of sessions in working places, with drives, NGO's Universities..etc . We gave them some numbers for any additional information or help.

Results: The complains have decreased by almost 50%, the reports by the traffic Dpt. showed that not more than 20 violations of the law occur per month. 10 hospitals, Jordanian airports, courts, universities, theaters, meeting rooms, public busses and a lot of taxies, declared to be tobacco free. Many work places nominated certain rooms for smoking.

This work was done by the collaboration of all the sectors, efforts are still aiming to completely eliminate smoking from Jordan. affiliation
