“Smoke-Free Hospital” Policy: Diagnostic Evaluation

Objective: To know about: a) the prevalence of smokers, b) the opinion towards the implementation of this policy, c) the exposal to tobacco during work-time, and at home.

Methods: Anonymous survey, was done whith personal data; daily consumption; environmental damage; time of exposure during work-time and at home; agreement with the partial or total prohibition of smoking; etc

Results: 3770 were delivered, 2326 (61.7 %) were given back., 637 (27.39%) smoke, F: 60% and M: 40%, and 1644 (70.68 % ) don't smoke , and 1.93% didn't answer, 23.5 % smoked at their working place and 52% were thinking to stop smoking, 11.16 % in the following month and 33.23% would accept to be helped by professionals. The smokers were: 29 % administrators, 21 % nurses, 39 % maintenance, 24.5 % physicians, 24.5 % non-phycisian health professionals, others (investigators, maids, etc) 28.5 %, and 29 % of the students The exposed to second- hand tobacco at home were 45 % smokers and 24.45 % non-smokers . 97 % acknowledges that smoke is unhealthy . 83 % agreed with this policy Conclusion:The prevalence of smokers is high, as well as the exposure during work. High percentage of our population is conscious of the harm tobacco can do to the environment. In addition to this, the majority of the people surveyed was in favor for a “Smoke-Free Hospital” policy.
