Tobacco Usage in Northern India:a Pandora's Box

Objective: to study the variety of tobacco available in northern india and it's impact

Methods: The variety of plants used to produce tobacco gives the basic platformon which the treatment of leaves in different manners using different types of yeasts and procedures lead to different end results. These are then blended with various flavours and combined with several other chewable objects such as areca nut, lime, catechu,etc to form several concoctions

Results: The harmful effects of various types of tobacco sometimes vary according to the type used. Some particular types are very prone to sub mucus fibrosis . This has been blamed to the impurities or additives such as areca nut or some metallic contents.. The practice of using a particular type of tobacco is seen in a particular geographical area leading to a peculiar type of pathological condition seen more frequently in that area. Moreover various types of tobacco are used in different manners. Some are kept as a quid at a fixed spot in oral cavity leading to a specific type pf cancer seen more frequently. It is thus important to understand all such varieties of tobacco as sometimes the dependence or addiction is more pronounced because of the additives
