Objective: Web-based smoking cessation programs have the potential to reach a wide population at a relatively low cost, but availability of these programs for youth in Canada is scarce. Quit4Life (Q4L) is a youth cessation program developed in accordance with the principles of social influence theory, using cognitive behavioural techniques to promote individual behaviour change. The Q4L website is designed as an interactive self-help program wherein the user can create a personalized profile, store and save completed activities, and sign up for email reminders and messages.

Methods: The objective of this research is to determine whether the Q4L website provides the information and assistance necessary to help young people quit smoking, and to test its appeal with a youth audience. The evaluation framework is a randomized control group model, using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. 250 young smokers were recruited and divided into control and intervention groups. All participants completed base-line, post-program and 3 and 6 month follow-up surveys. The intervention group completed the 4 week, 4 step program; with selected participants chosen for in-depth interviews to assess the ‘look and feel' of the site.

Results: The Q4L evaluation is currently in the field. Expected results by July 2006 include cessation and reduction rates at 3 months post-intervention, and participant feedback on program components, presentation, duration, barriers, effectiveness and appeal. This research will also provide valuable learnings on recruiting youth to on-line cessation programming and evaluation, and the effectiveness of the web as a self-help cessation tool.
