Smoking cessation Standard Reporting Template

Susan Taylor, T&T Consulting Limited, Kuku Beach Road, Levin, New Zealand

Objective:

In 2002, the NZ Ministry of Health (MoH) commissioned BRC Marketing & Social Research, to undertake a project aimed at improving the quality and usefulness of information collected by smoking cessation providers, for their own purposes and for the purposes of reporting to the Ministry.

Methods:

Phase 1 This was conducted in 2002–2003 and included a review of the contractual requirements surrounding data collection and reporting, as well as initial discussions with key people about the issues surrounding the collection and reporting of information.

Phase 2 This was conducted in 2003 -2004 and included a focus on developing a standard reporting template for programmes providing interventions that include both NRT and counselling/support, in an attempt to improve the consistency of service delivery and reporting across the country.

Phase 3 This was conducted in 2004 -2005 and included training in the use of the tool, implementation and formative evaluation on the effective use of the standard tool and data collection, and to identify areas for improvement of Ministry of Health funded intensive smoking cessation providers.

Results:

Five smoking cessation programmes/sites within the sector were selected to undertake a pilot test of the draft smoking cessation standard reporting template (SCSRT). In 2005, the template is now used nationally by 24 Mâori Providers. The presentation will demonstrate how data is collected and the effectiveness of this tool in providing MoH with a minimum set of standard data on the status of consumers utilising intensive smoking cessation services locally, regionally and nationally.
