In this presentation we will discuss the results of the first annual Legacy First Look Report on Smoking in Movies. With support of the American Legacy Foundation and National Cancer Institute, Dartmouth researchers have content coded the top 100 box office hits from 1996-2004 for tobacco use. The reseachers report trends for the proportion of movies containing tobacco use, the total number of occurrences of smoking presented per year, the total hours of screen smoking delivered per year, the proportion of tobacco occurrences delivered by youth rated movies, and proportion of movies delivering tobacco brand appearances. Generally, the trend is for less movie smoking over time for this period, but with a greater proportion of tobacco occurrences being delivered by youth-rated movies.
