Teresa Kelle, MPH, Tobacco Control, Ministery of Health, Urb. El Silencio. Centro Simon Bolivar. Torre Sur. Piso 3. Ofic. 326, Caracas, Venezuela and Dubravka Becerra, MPH, Regent, SAAS Pharmacy, Urb. La Boyera. Edif. Parque Araguaney, Caracas, Venezuela.

Objective: To compare the amount of the residual nicotine present in different cigarette brands manufactured in Venezuela.

Methods: A quantitative and descriptive study was used. For the analysis, samples of smoked, cut tobacco and filters were used. The quantity of nicotine was established by means of the ultraviolet/visible spectrofotometry. The quantity of residual nicotine was determined on the basis of the difference between the quantity of nicotine contained in the cut tobacco and the quantification of the ability of filters to retain nicotine to the smokers, and the analysis of the ability of filters to retain nicotine to the smokers by the use of the vaccine pump procedure.

Results: •The total nicotine quantity present in the cut tobacco varies from 10.12 mg to 5.69 mg per cigarette.

•The nicotine quantity kept in the filters varies from 2.75 mg to 1.27 mg per filter.

•The residual nicotine quantity in the different cigarettes brands varies from 7.75 mg to 4.02 per cigarette brand.
