Tobacco Control Benefits from Participation in International Networking of Health Promotion Foundations

Objective: Important projects to forward the sharing of knowledge among and establishment of health promotion foundations to fund/support tobacco control are highlighted.

Methods: A review and description of some health promotion actions and events in 2005 that have forwarded tobacco control worldwide.

Results: The Thai Health Promotion Foundation and International Network of Health Promotion Foundations participated in the WHO Pro Lead Projects (12 countries) and met representatives of more than 15 other countries at the WHO sponsored Sixth Global Conference on Health Promotion in Bangkok where delegates from over 100 countries participated. Tobacco control benefits when tobacco control and health promotion partners work together for sustainable mechanisms of funding and support. For example, in 2005, Mongolia passed new tobacco control legislation and ensured continued support for their efforts through establishing a tobacco tax funded health promotion foundation.
