Telemedicine as a new tool for tobacco cessation

Objective: Telemedicine becomes an important support to quit smoking (i.e. entry into force of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and Resolution on e-Health, 2005).

Smokers will access new services such as: - A personalized coaching, - A Laser Acupuncture Therapy.

Moreover, General Physicians will be able to improve their knowledge thanks to an e-learning course dedicated to tobacco.

Methods: Personalized coaching to quit smoking Integrated framework using: a Breath Carbon Monoxide Monitor and a Software. Tests are stored and sent to a Health Professional who provides a follow-up of the results via SMS or email.

Laser Acupuncture Therapy A low-energy laser device works on acupuncture points according to established protocols of pain therapy. It is used for treatment of pain resulting from nicotine privation. Randomized and controlled tests showed the efficiency of acupuncture (Dr Prulière, Dr Requena, actualités tabac, June 2003).

E-learning Remote Training Courses in the field of tobacco: - Learning content based on Courses delivered at the French Faculties of Medicine (cyber medical campus) and on Tobacco Control Activities - Implementation Tools: Internet, TV, iPod, Portable Playstation - Public: GPs, Students, anyone willing to improve its knowledge…

Results: These are methods implemented by ‘TMT Télémédecine' a French company specialized in ICT for Health. We believe this offer will efficiently contribute to the fight against nicotine dependence.
