Objective: Centers for tobacco control are being developed in many countries, but these centers vary in their geographic reach, main mission and funding. How to select effective approaches for a new center to build capacity for tobacco control in Thailand is highlighted.
Methods: An analysis of the general outline of the new Research Center for Tobacco Control (RCTC) in Bangkok funded by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation was undertaken using simple content analysis methods.
Results: Findings show an emphasis on developing specialized knowledge, commissioned, policy-relevant research to meet national FCTC-related obligations, and broadening the scope of research to involve more researchers in applied and operational research.
