The 13th World Conference on Tobacco OR HealthBuilding capacity for a tobacco-free worldJuly 12-15, 2006, Washington, DC, USA |
Objective: The Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC), which leads the Alberta Tobacco Reduction Strategy, has made 18-24 years olds a key priority within the strategy, as they have the highest tobacco use rates in Alberta. These rates are attributed to the lack of tobacco reduction interventions and policies for this age group, while simultaneously being targeted by the tobacco industry. As a result, the Young Adult Tobacco Reduction Strategy (YTRS) was developed in 2003 as a comprehensive strategy, coordinating efforts amongst partners and involving young adults in the development of innovative strategies for this population.
Methods: The YTRS was created as a result of consultations, interviews with stakeholders, focus groups, and a literature review. The strategy encompasses awareness raising, cessation support and policy development, all supported through community grants. It focuses on tobacco industry counter-marketing, and provides learning opportunities (conferences and workshops), collaborative initiatives and ongoing provincial support to grant recipients to ensure effective implementation.
Results: Tobacco use rates amongst this population have decreased since the implementation of the strategy. Policies on most Alberta post-secondary institutions have been strengthened, private businesses in Alberta (e.g. oil field industry) are working towards healthier environments for their workers, young adults have been mobilized to take action on tobacco reduction, and capacity has been built within communities to move forward local bylaws. This strategy is ongoing and will continue its work with young adults to reduce tobacco use rates.
