Tobacco Control Advocacy Efforts: the Silence Conspiracy!

THOMAS M. MOSOBA, N/A, EDITORIAL, The Citizen, Nation Media Group (Tanzania) Limited, TABATA, RELINI, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Objective: Tobacco growing and business seem to thrive in Tanzania without a care. Few if any groups are working towards minimising effects and the Government is reluctant to ratify the FCTC.

Methods: Media output over the last few years on control efforts is reviewed and studied. An oral probe is also done to determine extent of advocacy efforts.

Results: The level of advocacy is low and tobacco industry thrive on the silence. Influence by the industry and government emerge as hinderances to efective control stratergies.
