Building capacity for a tobacco-free world

July 12-15, 2006, Washington, DC, USA

Friday, July 14, 2006: 3:30 PM-5:00 PM
Room 201 (Convention Center)
WHO & Tobacco Product Regulation in Light of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
Tobacco Product Regulation is governmental oversight and enforcement of how tobacco products are manufactured, distributed, packaged and labelled in order to promote public health protection. WHO has three entities addressing this area: Tobacco Free Initiative focuses international attention, resources and action on the global tobacco epidemic; WHO Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg) serves as a think-tank on this issue; WHO Tobacco Laboratory Network strengthens capacity for the testing and research of the contents and emissions of tobacco products. All three will work on a recommendation for the setting of upper limits to tobacco smoke toxicants.
